Why do I teach Jewish songs in my course?
First, because I love them, and this enthusiasm is viral :). There are beautiful melodies, with lyrics that bring back to
I’ve been singing Sephardic, Yiddish songs since decades, with my own bands, or as a guest musician in different Klezmer bands. I am also responsible for a Yiddish songbook - in Hungarian languages! It was heretical at first, but now everybody sings them.
I love to work with these songs. It can bring up sadness, pain, yes. But at the same time, during my healing journey, the one and most important thing to do for our growth is to meet and feel our pain. So the path to wholeness is not avoiding pain, but going through it.
And well, as you sing those songs, it helps you to go into these emotions, but at the same time you can contain it, so it does not overwhelm you. YOU are the singer of the song, you are in control.
That is why you can heal yourself with song. The moment you sing, your attention shifts from your broken heart to the material of the song. You go like: “ yes, it is painful, but what is the ornamentation on the next line?”. So your focus goes to the beauty of the music.
